The last time I used a flagship phone, was way back in 2013 and it was the Galaxy S4. The Exynos variant to be exact, back in 2013 Exynos was not cool. It was miles behind its Snapdragon counterpart and it was visible. My experience with the S4 was horrible. So horrible, that in fact, I haven't had the courage to purchase another Flagship since then on.
After that, I switched boat and jumped to the WindowsPhone clad. My first taste of WindowsPhone was from a Lumia 520. The cheapest WindowsPhone! But, the performance at times was better than my less than a year old flagship Galaxy. WindowsPhone was fluid even on extreme budget hardware. Later on, I upgraded to a Lumia 730, which to date I adore. It is for me the best phone ever! The only place where it lacked would be the storage. Then I jumped shipped again to Android and am now using a Redmi 4x.
So the point behind me going through my phone purchasing history is to show, that you do not need to break the bank or sell a kidney or maybe take a loan to get a good smartphone experience. For me the Redmi 4x is ample. It has excellent battery life, which easily gets me through 2days. Something which Flagships struggle to do to date. Its display is decent, nah good for the price. The viewing angle is better than the Pixel 2xl and the display does not burn. The camera is the only segment where I would say it falls behind. Especially in low lighting. However, there are other camera focused budget phone like the Moto G5 plus which offer excellent cameras for the price. These budget phones also include a headphone jack! Which means I do not require to spend money on dongles.
As Flagships like the iPhone X, Note 8 and Pixel 2xl continue to increase their price. They are also increasing the compromise which a consumer needs to make to enjoy a "Flagship" experience. An experience which lasts for a year or two at max. Is it worth $1000 plus?
I mean you could buy a Moto G5plus or Redmi note 4 or any Honor phones for a fraction of the price and enjoy a no-compromise experience. These phones get the job done and then some and are easier to replace after a year or 2 of abuse.
